With EcoBoost Flex, Ford chases former V-8 buyers

Ford hopes that with an EcoBoost V-6, the Flex SEL can be the crossover that appeals to people who need the power of an SUV with a V-8.

BOULDER, Colo. -- Ford says it has a home for customers who are leaving large, V-8-powered SUVs but need towing capacity: the top-level version of the Flex crossover.

But the switch will be pricey. The Flex SEL with the EcoBoost V-6 engine option starts at $39,995 including shipping. Loaded, the cross-over approaches $50,000, Ford Motor Co. said last week at a media event here. Ford is launching the vehicle now.

EcoBoost adds turbocharging and direct fuel injection for power and fuel economy.

The Flex with the turbocharged 355-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 is EPA-rated at 16 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway.

A Toyota Sequoia with four-wheel drive is rated at 14 city/18 highway.

The Flex with EcoBoost can tow 4,500 pounds. Ford engineers lowered the vehicle, stiffened the springs and added electric power steering to the EcoBoost model.

Many options are available -- such as Park Assist, which automatically parallel-parks the vehicle.
