Chinese Company in Talks to Buy Hummer

Who is going to buy Hummer? General Motors took the unusual action of announcing a memorandum of understanding on its sale Tuesday morning, without naming the buyer. GM's chief financial officer, Ray Young, said in a conference call that Hummer's potential new owners "prefer not to disclose" their identity at this time.

But the drama behind the identity of Hummer's prospective new owner didn't last long. Earlier in the day, the New York Times reported that GM has reached a preliminary agreement with the Chinese company Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company Ltd. GM confirmed the report later this afternoon.

Sichuan Tengzhong is a privately owned maker of road equipment, but has recently been moving down into the heavy-duty truck market, according to the Times. If completed, the deal would mark the first time a brand selling cars in America would be bought by a Chinese company. Several Chinese companies have been rumored to be in the running to buy Swedish automakers Saab and Volvo in recent months. Estimates have Hummer selling for less than $500 million.

"The Hummer brand is synonymous with adventure, freedom and exhilaration, and we plan to continue that heritage by investing in the business, allowing Hummer to innovate and grow in exciting new ways under the leadership and continuity of its current management team," said Yang Yi, CEO of Tengzhong. "We will be investing in the Hummer brand and its research and development capabilities, which will allow Hummer to better meet demand for new products such as more fuel-efficient vehicles in the U.S."

According to GM, Hummer will continue to maintain its U.S. headquarters and operations, and the brand will continue to be managed by the existing leadership team. Hummer's dealer network is also expected to be expanded worldwide by Sichuan, with the Chinese market of course one of the main targets. If all goes well, the deal will be completed by the third quarter of this year.

It may end up being a hard sell here, however, as Hummer has been associated with the American military. The potential sensitive nature of Chinese ownership may be why Sichuan Tengzhong did not want to be named at the outset.

Early on, last year when GM said it would sell or close the brand, Russian investors were the lead candidates, later, Chinese automaker Hunan Chengfeng Motor Company entered the rumor mill as a potential suitor. Middle Eastern oil was also a possiblity; Aabar Investments recently acquired 9.1-percent of Daimler AG, and Mubadala Development Company owns 5-percent of Ferrari. Both investment firms are based in Abu Dhabi.

GM says it will continue to build H3s for the new owner on an interim basis, until the purchaser can get its own production up and running. The deal "will secure more than 3000 jobs in manufacturing, engineering and dealerships across the country," GM says in its press release.

It has closed its South African plant that built the H3 for right-hand-drive markets, but the Shreveport, Louisiana factory that builds left-hand-drive H3s also is gearing up for new compact pickups expected for the 2012 model year.

And GM has designs for the next-generation H2 and H3, plus plans for the Jeep Wrangler-like H4 that should sweeten the deal for the new owner. One big question mark is whether AM General would resume production of a civilian H2 under contract for a new owner.

Young said GM has some 16 entities interested in buying Saturn division. He described them mostly as "interested parties," i.e. dealership groups, and private equity groups. Young noted that the process is taking longer than expected, that one issue still not resolved is whether GM would continue to build Saturns on contract or whether a new owner will find another source of vehicles. Roger Penske's interest is rumored to involve a deal with Nissan/Renault in which excess Nissan capacity in the U.S. would go to future Saturn models.

Young also tried to offer some reassurance that Opel will continue to be an integral part of General Motors. Asked who is going to be running Opel, he said that the new GM European team will report to Adam Opel AG. He said that American models developed, in part, overseas are still on track for introduction. But we already knew that - the 2010 Buick LaCrosse is scheduled to go on-sale this summer and the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze, already on sale in much of the world, enters the North American market more than a year from now.

But the LaCrosse's Epsilon platform was developed chiefly in Warren, Michigan, with Opel-specific tuning done in Germany, and the Cruze is largely a product of GM's Daewoo operations in South Korea.

My concern is whether GM will continue to have substantial operations in Western Europe (where Chrysler has been lagging for decades). Young admitted that lots of details needed to be worked out with Magna International and Sberbank. The good news here is that GM isn't dealing with Fiat's Sergio Marchionne, the guy who extracted $2.5 billion from GM so it wouldn't have to buy Marchionne's company.

Finally, Young also outlined a plan for "wind-down" agreements with about 1100 dealers it plans to close, on its way to a total dealer reduction of roughly 2700 dealers in the next few years. GM expects some dealers will drop out due to attrition, and others will have agreements with whoever owns Hummer, Saturn and Saab.

GM will contribute support payments to dealers that have been told they will lose their franchise agreements. Young didn't disclose how much each dealer would get. Nor did he say how GM would handle the dealers' inventory. Turning over unsold cars and trucks from a closed dealer to one that stays open means the '09 leftovers will linger that much longer into 2010. It's better than the alternative, however; accelerating sales incentives to clear cars and trucks from lots before they close. That would have a devastating effect on the value of new, and late-model GM vehicles.

Honda Accord gets top marque for reliability

The Honda Accord is the UK's most reliable new car, and among seven of the top 10 hassle-free motors that come from a Japanese carmaker, according to a report from Which? Car.

The Accord, which sells for just under £20,000 brand new, scored 98.5% in the magazine's survey of motorists, while the Honda Jazz came a close second with a 98.2% reliability rating.

Five other cars from Japanese marques scored more than 94% in the survey, which was based on information from the owners of more than 84,000 vehicles about breakdowns, faults and niggles they had experienced while driving.

At the other end of the scale, the sporty Audi A5 was rated the new car most likely to go wrong, with a 75.8% reliability rating putting it bottom of the 121 models reviewed. Owners of the stylish coupe reported significant problems with its electrics.

Second from bottom of the table was the Ford Galaxy, followed by the much-acclaimed Jaguar XF which scored 78%. The report pointed out that this was bad news for Jaguar as it meant the XF fared even worse than the S-type which it replaced, although that too appeared in the bottom 10.

Electrical systems, which are designed to make cars more efficient, reliable and comfortable, were one of the biggest problem areas identified in the survey.

Although Japanese brands dominated the top 10, several medium-sized models from these firms fell short – the Honda Civic, Nissan Qashqai and Toyota Auris all scored around 87% on reliability when new.

"Owning a reliable car can make the difference between getting your summer holiday off to a flying start and sitting on the hard shoulder of the M6," said Richard Headland, editor of Which? Car.

"Japanese cars in the main seem to run like clockwork, although there are a few exceptions to the rule. It's also encouraging to see good reliability scores for the bestselling Ford Fiesta and other small, economical cars."

A spokesman for Audi said: "Based on the very small sample size of the Which? survey, the reliability score for the A5 represents a total of just seven faults, and Audi has so far sold over 8,000 A5 models in the UK.

"Audi is world renowned for building extremely high quality cars, and in the vast majority of cases very strong reliability scores reflect this. We believe that sample sizes of below 500 cars do not generate useful or workable data, and we therefore do not acknowledge the Which? findings as valid indicators of the level of A5 reliability."

Students Build a Car the Blind Can Drive

blind-car

The same technology that lets cars drive themselves allows the blind to drive, too.

Virginia Tech undergrads packed an all-terrain buggy with technology lifted from the university’s DARPA Urban Challenge entry to create a car the blind can drive. The semi-autonomous vehicle uses a laser range finder, voice software and other sensory technology, and it worked flawlessly when blind drivers took the wheel on a closed course. Advocates for the blind joined the lead researcher in calling the vehicle a breakthrough in independent living for the visually impaired.

“We are not only excited about the vehicle itself, but also the potential spinoff technologies from this project that could end up helping the blind,” Dennis Hong, the director of the university’s Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory, told Wired.com.

Wes Majerus, who is blind, called the car "a great first step" after taking it for a spin.

Wes Majerus, who is blind, called the car "a great first step" after taking it for a spin.

The car was born of a challenge the National Federation of the Blind’s Jernigan Institute issued in 2004 when it called on universities to develop a vehicle for the blind. Virginia Tech accepted the challenge in 2006 — the only university to do so — and received a $3,000 grant to begin the project.

The Blind Driver Challenge team at Virginia Tech’s Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory built the buggy. The steering wheel is hooked up to a distance monitor that gathers information from laser range finders, and it uses voice software to tells the driver how far to turn the wheel. For example, the monitor will tell the driver “turn left three clicks.” As the driver does that, the monitor makes three clicking noises.

A vibrating vest provides cues to follow when accelerating and decelerating. The vest vibrates in different places — the back, the belly and the shoulders — to convey different commands. When the entire vest vibrates, it means, “Slam on the brakes!”

“Originally we had a vibrating chair, but the vehicle was also vibrating on account of the motor, so drivers had some difficulty differentiating between the two,” Hong said. “The 2009-2010 team will be applying this technology to an electric vehicle to eliminate the vibration caused by the motor altogether.”

Hong wants to continue working on a tactile map interface. The system, called Airpix, shoots compressed air through tiny holes on a screen in real time, to provide a layout of the area surrounding the vehicle. Drivers can “read” the map with a hand, much like Braille. Hong said he needs more feedback from the blind and visually impaired to refine the system.

All this technology is clearly in its earliest stage,s and we’re a long way from the day when the blind join us in slogging through the morning commute. But the Federation for the Blind hailed the vehicle and the promise it offers.

“It’s a great first step,” Wes Majerus, an access-technology expert for the federation, said in a press release. “As far as the differences between human instructions and those given by the voice in the Blind Driver Challenge car, the car’s instructions are very precise. You use the technology to act on the environment — the driving course — in a very orderly manner.”

Majerus drove the car and said, “It was great.” Mark Riccobono, executive director of the Jernigan Institute, called his test drive historic. “This is sort of our going-to-the-moon project,” he said.

Although the technology is progressing, laws prohibiting the blind from driving — not to mention public perception about that possibility — must be changed, Hong said. That is why the Blind Driver’s Challenge team will be promoting the vehicle’s technology at a National Federation for the Blind–sponsored parade in Washington, D.C.

“People always say, ‘What’s the point of this project?’” Hong said. “But blind people who drive the vehicle always have a big smile on their face afterwards. It’s therapeutic and gives them hope of being entirely independent.”

The Acura ZDX: A Crossover Sedan

Zdx01

The Acura ZDX sport utility sedan has been introduced to the world. For the first time in history, we can describe an Acura as wildly inappropriate.

We prepared ourselves for the worst when we learned that Acura was planning to reveal the prototype of their BMW X6 fighter at the New York International Auto Show yesterday. After all, the only thing the world needs less than the original X6 is a milquetoast imitation. But somehow, Acura managed to nearly win us over with their signature inoffensive design, exceptionally adequate performance and seamless integration of technology — all of which will be perfected by the time the production ZDX goes on sale.

Our only reservation? As the fate of the world turns from bad to worse, the luxury sport-ute sedan eschews our new national modesty like a pre-revolution French king. Forget about letting them eat cake. The ZDX is a heaping helping of foie gras.

The launch began with remarks from Jeff Conract Conrad, Acura’s VP of sales. Conract Conrad told the crowd that the ZDX "takes the best attributes of a stylish coupe, a versatile sedan and a flexible SUV - and successfully blends them into a head-turning vehicle for active and adventurous individuals to explore their passions." That also means it’s got the cargo space of a stylish coupe with the agility, fuel economy and visibility of an SUV. We imagine the "head turning" refers to what ZDX drivers will be doing when they attempt to parallel park — despite the on-board cameras and blind-spot detectors. Like nonalcoholic beer or Van Halen unplugged, the ZDX has the potential to be the worst of both worlds.

Luckily for Acura, the ZDX prototype exhibits the carmaker’s trademark flawless execution. No word on performance yet, but we imagine it’ll be more than adequate with Super Handling All-Wheel Drive and a paddle-shifted six-speed transmission mated to an all-aluminum VTEC V6. One of their best decisions was hiring Michelle Christensen, a 25-year-old recent graduate of Art Center College of Design, who managed to keep the prototype’s sheetmetal from aping a Pontiac Aztek or an AMC Eagle. It’s only because of Acura’s new design language that the ZDX kind of looks like an Autobot.

Conract Conrad suggested that ZDX owners would use their car for "navigating city streets in search of a trendy new restaurant, or comfortably covering the miles to a favorite ski resort or ocean front retreat." Unfortunately for potential owners, its SUV-height suspension means you’ll be at eye-level with your former coworkers when they’re sitting on the bus headed to the unemployment office. At least the Acura/ELS premium sound system lets you drown out derisive taunts from the proletariat, while the AcuraLink navigation system can route you around those pesky breadlines.

The Audi A5 Goes Perfect

The internet is buzzing with news about the new Audi A5 Sportback. Audi describes it "as emotional and elegant as a coupe, as comfortable as a sedan, and as practical as an Avant". Top Gear wonders if the A5 is just the coupe version of the A4.

Here is a short video clip of a sketch of the A5...

The A5 Sportback will start rolling into Audi dealerships in September. The car will be open for ordering with an entry price of EUR 36,050 for the 2.0 TDI version. A version with an even more attractive price will follow in the middle of 2010. This will make the A5 Sportback the entry model for the A5 model range.

Audi A3 - The Perfect High End Family Car

2009 Audi A3The infamous German auto maker Audi launched its small family car Audi A3 for the first time in the year 1996. A3 has been released in two generations, and these cars are closely related to the Touran, Skoda Octavia, Audi TT, Caddy, Seat Toledo and Volkswagen Golf, Seat Leon and the likes of them, as they all share the Volkswagen's A Platform.

The first generation model named A3 was launched in the European automobile market in 1966. It looked like a sporty car because of its three door hatch back body. The engine of this car was configured as Inline Four Cylinder. At the beginning of 1999, Audi launched two other models that consisted of better quality than the previous ones. One of them was 1.9 TDI Diesel Engine with variable Geometry Turbocharger and Unit Injector PD Technology. The other one was 1.8 with a power transmission of 177 bhp.

In the year 1999, for the first time Audi was forced to fulfill the demands according to market. For this reason, company made some quality and had to look out for other possibilities to make appropriate changes to its previous versions of cars. This new version included a variation of six speed manual gear-boxes with 177 bhp in 1.8L turbo engine and 129 bhp in 1.9 TDI.

Some of the other facilities incorporated in the A3 series include Brake Force Distribution Computer, Transaction Control and Electronic Stability Program. The marketing of Audi A3 was stopped in Europe at the beginning of 2003, but it continued it's selling in some of the developing countries.
